South Alps

Leave the urban areas behind and head into the mountains, and you'll see a part of Japan that you might never have thought existed.  I visited the South Alps region, and was amazed at the ruggedness of these peaks.  I hiked a three-day track out of Kamikoche that traverses several of Japan's highest peaks; it is very popular with the Japanese during the busy summer months, but in October it was cold enough to keep the crowds away.  I would have to say that this is the best hike I've ever done, with spectacular scenery, fun scrambling along an occasionally precarious ridge, and just enough exposure to make it exciting.  After visiting this area, it is not difficult to understand why Japan has a strong mountaineering history.

I'll have some more pictures of this area posted in the future.
