If you could only visit one city in Japan, Kyoto would be the obvious
choice, with its high concentration of traditional Japanese cultural sights.
Jidai Matsuri
This is the one and only event that I preset on my itinerary at the
beginning of my trip. One of Kyoto's three annual Great Festivals,
it consists of a parade whose participants are all dressed in outfits from
various imperial historical eras. The pictures below are from the
preparations before the parade, where all the participants are milling
about and you can get up close and see immaculate detail of the lavish
costumes. In fact, the parade itself is a rather staid and boring
affair which is of minimal interest. I skipped this part and saved
my energy for the far more exciting Great Fire
Festival, which occurs later that same night in the northern outskirts
beyond town.
