Temples and Castles

The most common images of Japanese culture are the temples, pagodas, and shrines.  Japan has no lack of Shinto shrines and Buddhist Temples; in fact, I saw so many that by the end of the trip I didn't care to see another temple in my life.  There are also several castles and palaces remaining from the feudal and imperial eras.  I was particularly struck by the extremely austere interiors; apparently Japanese rulers had a different idea of luxury compared to Westerners.
